Back and Such

Filed under: life — Kate @ 8:38 pm

As so often happens with me and blogs, I fell off the wagon. But I’m back! (For now)

I don’t feel quite so “green” when the world is covered in white and I admit we’ve been lazy with the basics. But the chickens are surviving the winter and we’re still getting two eggs pretty much every day.

My parents hosted a brunch on Christmas day for cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. I offered to make our favorite egg dish because hey, I have a LOT of eggs! Those in the family who didn’t know about my chickens were quite surprised to hear where the eggs had come from. I’ve found that the reaction tends to to start with “What?!” then go to “Are you allowed to have chickens in the city?” and then finally wind up with me holding a Q&A session all about living with chickens.

I got to go out to Montana in December to visit my 8-month-old nephew. Growing up I thought I’d be a city girl for life but I’m getting tired of the hustle, bustle, and concrete. Getting out to Montana always makes me wonder if I could be a country girl some day. Could I really live 45 minutes away from the nearest proper grocery store? Could I live without delivery pizza and local Chinese food?

It’s fun to dream about having a bit of land for the chickens…and some ducks and geese and maybe a cow or two. My Brother turned to me in the car as I was dreaming aloud and said “what the heck do you know about having a cow?” I replied “About as much as I used to know about having chickens.”

Anywho, on to food in general. For a nice change, we actually tried a recipe from one of the far too many magazines I buy. Dinner was Thai Green Chicken Curry from Bon Appetit’s December 2007 issue. It turned out really well except that we could only find one kind of green curry paste, brand was Thai Kitchen, and it didn’t have enough kick. We will definitely try it again after we make a trip to the Asian supermarket for proper curry paste.
