Big A@$ Yoga

Filed under: Uncategorized — Kate @ 1:12 pm

I have been wanting to take the Yoga Center of Minneapolis’ Big Ass Yoga class since I first read a STrib article about it two years ago but could never find a time that worked for me. Well, no more!

My mom and I are signed up for the class on Friday mornings and it started today. Apparently half the class (including my mom) couldn’t make it so there were only two of us. It was really nice to get such individual attention. Even better, our teacher is the gal who came up with the Big Ass idea in the first place. She had moved away from teaching for a while and we’re her first class back.

She talked about being 200 pounds and atrophied when she went to her first yoga class at a health club. She literally sat there and couldn’t do any of it. But she kept going, kept trying, but was still frustrated that the skinny teachers had no clue what it was like to move with “extra real estate” in the way. So she started this class. And apparently she’s still picky about who is allowed to teach it, they have to have dealt with that “extra real estate.”

As has been the case in other yoga classes, my left shoulder is weak and sore from my two car accidents. Not to mention that when I do a downward facing dog, I’m balancing a hell of a lot of weight. But she gave me some tips on ways to practice at home and repeatedly said to both of us, “just go as far as you can, it will get further each time.” Too often my ego makes me go too far with a stretch and then I just hurt myself instead of improving.

I’m really excited for the next six weeks, and maybe six more after that if I continue! Sore…but excited. :)
