Going to town

Yesterday morning we took the mini-bus to town to get some groceries. Arusha is pretty rough feeling but it was fun to see what's out there. The British influence is obvious with Cadbury products dominating the candy shelves. On top of our massive shopping trip, we also got a delivery of organic vegetables and fruit from a local woman who delivers to several staff members at Peace House. We have two big bunches of little sugar bananas that are amazing. She had to buy the apples at the store but the zucchini, carrots, tomatoes, avocados, watermelon, etc all came from her garden. We also found raspberries in town (at Meat King of all places) that are delicious. It's so nice to have fresh, local produce. Will be a tough transition to go back to winter produce at home.
(The weird alcohol is not ours!)

Mom really wanted to make tacos and amazingly we found a packet of seasoning at Shop-Rite. It was $3 but it was worth it for a tasty dinner! Macon, the director's daughter who is here helping the volunteer coordinator, came over and made fabulous guacamole. The avocados here are gigantic. She stayed for dinner and with Katie (our roommate) as well it was quite the little dinner party, lots of fun!

We also made a quick stop at a big souvenir shop in town and got postcards (finally!) that will go in the mail today or tomorrow. We're very curious to see how long they take to arrive. Got a few other goodies as well but we're waiting to go to the Maasaii Market in town so we can buy handcrafted goods from the crafters themselves.

Time to go catalog another stack of books! Kwaheri! (Good bye in Swahili)

  1. Kate, Jambo - i think it means "Hallo" in Swahali and not something rude! Glad Judy was able to celebrate her birthday in style but no sure about all those beans...Your trip to town sounded fun and all those delicious fruits and veggies will make up for them.
The library project looks hard work but well worth it and the kids will soon get the hang of things. Beint able to read is such a gift and who knows where their imaginations will take them>
Kate, you're a true Minnesotan missing the snow - we could do with some African sunshine here, we had snow flurries yesterday. Rich sent a photo of the humungus icicles on the side of your house.Show it to the kids at Peace House, they will be amazed.
Did you know that Kraft now owns Cadburys? A good execuse to eat plenty in case they change the recipe.
You and Judy have certainly packed in lots since you arrived and we look forward to reading more of your adventures now we know how to send a comment - the "test" was us.
