A lot of the issues touched on in the movie were familiar to us. We've seen King Corn and done a fair bit of reading about food, agriculture, and food politics. However, nothing is the same as seeing the images of crowded hen houses and cattle in their own manure. There is certainly a level of alarmism at play but in this case, I believe it is deserved.
I knew diabetes was on the rise, but was shocked that 1 in 3 people born after 2000 will get type 2 diabetes. The number is 1 in 2 for minorities. Why are overly processed foods cheaper than fruits and vegetables? How come the USDA doesn't have the power to shut down processing plants that repeatedly fail inspections?
These are all issues that Rich and I feel passionately about and yet we fall into the same trap as most Americans. Lack of time, lack of money, and lack of motivation. We have decided that August will be "No Artificial Sweetener Month" for us. We've already cut a lot of sweeteners out of our pantry but we will try to cut them all. I don't know if we'll make it, but I'm excited to try. I think it would be interesting to do a no corn byproducts month, but also a LOT more difficult.
Been up since 4am so apologies if this is a bit rambly. Will post about our progree as August comes.
