A month of learning

Filed under: life, food — Kate @ 8:22 pm

While I like to think I learn each and every day, this month will be particularly educational.

In a non-foodcraftlife related world, I’m spending the next week in class to become a real estate broker. Oddly enough I hope never to have to use my broker’s license as it’s mostly a precaution in case something happens to my current broker, also my Dad. But hey, it never hurts to further your career education.

Then on the 21st I’m taking a Knife Skills class at a local kitchen store. I feel like my fear of knives slows me down in the kitchen and perhaps a bit of education will boost my confidence and help me master the techniques I see on all the shows. I think I’ll pack my own first aid kit that night.

On the 27th my husband and I are taking a Sushi Making class with the chef from a great local sushi restaurant. We both adore sushi and we have some good resources for sushi goods. I’m excited to learn more, and to be able to tailor sushi to my tastes at home.

Then on the 29th I’m taking a class on preserving and canning. I think I’m most excited about this one. These seem like skills that shouldn’t be taught in a classroom, rather handed down through generations. But hey, I’m one of the youngest cousins so I was only seven when my grandma moved to a condo in the city. I remember a little bit of canning from before that but none afterwards. Now, a few years on in life, I’m looking forward to presenting jars of jam and preserves to my family. (Even if they just look at me funny in return.) There is just such a unique joy in knowing you made something. Even using my homemade vanilla extract gives me a thrill.

I’ve been reading an eGullet thread about vinegar making and I think I may have another hobby to try. My poor husband never knows what he’s going to come home to any more!
