Fresh eggs…REALLY fresh!
So as I mentioned, the girls have started laying. Or rather, one of them has. I’m sure it’s Patsy as she is slightly older and I’ve caught her in the nest box with a very fresh egg. Hopefully Eddy will follow shortly.
I can’t believe how much fun it is going out and looking for eggs! So far she’s an evening layer but I assume that will cycle around with the average 25-hour egg schedule.
The first egg was teeny, about half the size of my driver’s license. I couldn’t bring myself to ruin it so I actually blew out the yolk and plan to make it an ornament or something. Hubby thinks I should refill it with plaster to make it less fragile.
The eggs seem to be getting progressively bigger and now we have them on layer feed as well. We did eat egg #2 and it was great, what a vibrant yolk!
Even though I knew all along that we were getting these chickens for eggs, it still seems like magic that I can go out once a day and there’s an egg waiting for me. Who wants the goose that laid the golden eggs when you’ve got the most delicious brown eggs at your doorstep!
The middle egg is the first one from Patsy. The left eggs is hopefully the last storebought egg we’ll ever buy!
